Here is Tony Banks' podcast - a 20 min interview - in preparation for his upcoming release 'Six'. This upload also includes a press release and the advance CD back cover.

Personally, I'm looking forward to it more than any other Genesis solo release in a long time. For what it's worth, here's my mini review of Banks' most recent output based on Seven and the excerpts I've heard of Six:

Quote:

While orchestrated works by Tony Banks might be anathema to many Genesis fans, his releases Seven and the upcoming Six are the most accomplished, and certainly the richest, solo works he has released to date.

Seven and Six belong to a pastoral British tradition of composing that has otherwise been lost. In these works it's possible to hear early twentieth century shades of Delius, Holst, Vaughan Williams, Elgar and others. In Banks' works, as in those by the aforementioned composers, there is an indefinable sense of Britishness and tradition, of middle England, rolling countryside, of wartime English pride, all of which lend a touch of melancholy to the pieces and/or sentimentality, depending on your perspective.

This pastoral English sensibility is inherent to Genesis music, the earlier albums in particular: Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, but also the later Wind and Wuthering. It also defines the mid-1970s work of ex-Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips, whose The Geese and the Ghost and the early volumes of his Private Parts and Pieces series also present a tangible sense of historicity, of Englishness and folkloric times long gone. Though perhaps the least successful members of Genesis, Banks' and Phillips' often understated musical textures are not to be ignored. Woefully overlooked, they possess sensitivities and subtleties not always easily found in the pop songs of ex-band mates Phil Collins, and even some of Peter Gabriel's more chart-pleasing releases.

Tony Banks' Six and Seven also demonstrate his visual sense; they are at once cinematic and his work is again reminiscent of Vaughan William's music for film (as an example listen to the prelude from The 49th Parallel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgBIzb4jNcY and compare with Banks' 'Gateway' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCvkivWW0N4).
Here too you will hear intimations of contemporary movie soundtrack composers such as John Williams, who wrote the scores for Saving Private Ryan, The Colour Purple, and Schindler's List amongst dozens. I would like to think that it's only a matter of time before a filmmaker recognises the filmic range of emotions and moods that Six and Seven offer and commissions a score.

In addition to a film score, I'd very much like to hear a collaboration between Anthony Phillips and Tony Banks: The former's folkloric textures with Banks pastoral orchestrations could prove rewarding.

While it's true that the pieces Banks has written for these releases are not exactly ground-breaking and will probably have little impact in the so-called classical world, that's not the point. No, Banks is no Stravinsky, no Philip Glass, but, equally, the works should not be mistaken (as often seems to be the case, unfortunately) for budget orchestrations of rock or pop efforts that plague bargain bins everywhere; you know the kind: "The Cardiff Children's Orchestra play the hits of Mike and the Mechanics"; nor should they be mistaken for flavourless musical wallpaper. These are confident, thoughtful works with flashes of depth and even beauty that should not need to rely exclusively on the support of a die-hard Genesis fanbase. While it's true that they do uniquely and favourably broaden the panorama of the Genesis universe, they also stand up on their own, have their own integrity and are most certainly worthy of much more than just your passing interest or fleeting attention.

If you like Seven, check out:

Holst: The Planets and Somerset Rhapsody
Delius: On Hearing the First Cuckoo of Spring and other orchestral works
Vaughan Williams: The Complete Music for Film / The Lark Ascending / Oboe Concerto in A
Elgar: The Enigma Variations
John Williams: The E.T. soundtrack

--------------------------------------------------
