------------------------------------------------------------

Here's another Hackett release.
An NTSC one this time.
What have we here?
In October 1981 Steve's concert was filmed by a local TV crew and broadcasted.
There weren't many camera's, and sometimes it is even out of focus.
But, this is the closest we get to seeing a complete Cured tour concert
Sadly enough, Horizons, Kim and Overnight Sleeper are missing.
There has also been at least one and maybe even more radiobroadcasts of this concert.

The footage:
The video was kindly donated to us by Tom Kleinschmidt and is a low generation version. Although certainly no excellent quality, I haven't been able to find a better source.
There were a few dropouts in the video, which of course couldn't be repaired. But i did the repair the audiotrack at those moments, using a low generation version of the radiobroadcast. This way the dropouts aren't so distracting.

We also got in contact with Sylvain Despretz who was at the concert and helped us with some excellent photos, newspaper clippings and a great scan of the actual advert of the show.
I used all those items to make an additional slideshow. The audio for this one is not from the concert itself but of excellent quality.

------------------------------------------------------------

"Recollections from the days as an amateur rock journalist"

October 30th 1981: At Rochester's Triangle theatre, a patient crowd had waited unusually late for the show to start. A Friday night Bingo Game scheduled in the same theatre had forced organizers to postpone the show by a couple of hours. This was Steve Hackett's second US tour as a solo artist, and fans of the progressive rock movement had yet to digest the substance of what the 1970's had unleashed; hopes still ran high, that the solo careers of rock's best musicians would flourish into infinity.
None of us, of course, knew that the best part was already behind us. The previous year had seen a flurry of former Genesis remnants pass through town, with the Trio, Peter Gabriel, and Hackett himself, alternatively playing in town, within a few weeks of one another. Many went to all the shows, faithfully still, pining for the days when a single ticket would be enough to see them all onstage in one evening.
To us, it felt a lot like staring at a broken vase, trying to picture it whole; in the end, we took our musicians however they agreed to present themselves.

From the audience, someone handed a carved pumpkin at the stroke of midnight: Halloween. "Forget Genesis," Hackett tells the audience, when a loud fan shouts out the name of the Supergroup, "Go see the Stones, instead.!" The Stones were indeed playing in the next town, a few days later. A month later, Robert Fripp would reform King Crimson...
Great musicians passed through Upstate New York like commuters through Grand Central Station; perhaps it was the concentration of Universities, or the support of the many liberal radio stations in the area. Those were great years for concerts.
On that night, I was armed with my loaded cameras, backstage passes, tape recorders, and unfettered enthusiasm. The event was being taped by a Local TV crew for later broadcast; a fairly common event in those days of relative media independence.
Backstage, Hackett had quipped about how interviews felt like therapy sessions, and mentioned his Ego and his Nemo - his two selves, one playing, the other observing every move. He spoke of John Fowles, his taste for Joni Mitchell, skiing in Lake Tahoe, and his hopes for the future.
It was well into the evening that his manager barged into the green room: "You're on, mate; time for the show"! "You're joking,"? asked Hackett, "I thought we had plenty of time." He seemed genuinely happy to be writing his own ticket, meeting his fans, and touring America on his own - performing his own songs, turning up the guitar as loud as he wanted.
The future, indeed, seemed promising.
Notes:
This originally came in a package of two DVDs. I extracted the content with MakeMKV and combined the concert footage with MKVToolNix. It looks and sounds exactly the same because I did not reencode. The video looked more appropriate with a 5/4 aspect ratio so I changed the default to that when I combined the two parts (it's very easy to adjust back to 4/3 if you want).

The original DVD menus and the the audio for the bonus "Waiting in Line" video contained official music. This was removed.

The present torrent organizes the available content from EFDVDNTSC02 and EFDVDSH11 but cuts out the repeated elements so that the show can be played roughly continuously on a computer. See the notes below for more information.

This is my second attempt at this compilation because for the first one I used EFDVDSH04 for the Swiss broadcast when I should have used EFDVDSH11. I removed that torrent and would advise users who downloaded it to update it with this. I'm very sorry for this oversight. This is posted with the permission of Simon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
EFDVDNTSC02 Lineage:
This comes from a 1st generation NTSC VHS off the Japanese WOWOW rebroadcast. This broadcast is missing Please Don't Touch and half of Clocks,
which can be found on the Swiss broadcast. The quality is overall slightly better than the higher gen PAL source from the Swiss broadcast,
EFDVDSH04, but arguably slightly worse than the master PAL source of the Swiss broadcast, EFDVDSH11.

Audio: PCM, 1536 kb/s, 48 kHz, Stereo
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
EFDVDSH11 Lineage:
Whilst the EFDVDSH04 version of the Montreux show was taken from a low-generation VHS tape, Roger Salem / Willem Beens had access to a master
recording of this blistering performance from the Swiss broadcast "Canards Sauvages", which was circulated in the form of EFDVDSH11.

Although the Japanese broadcast from WOWOW, EFDVDNTSC02, contained more songs overall, the Swiss broadcast begins its broadcast with Jacuzzi
and the remaining songs (with the exception of Spectral Mornings) are in the same running order as the Japanese broadcast. The Swiss broadcast
contains the complete footage of Clocks along with Land Of A Thousand Autumns, Please Don't Touch and ends with Spectral Mornings, which on
the Japanese version was broadcasted as the third song.

Also played during this set were The Show & It's Now or Never, but they were not included in any of the broadcasts. There are still rumours one
of these transmissions may be released officially sometime, either edited like the Swiss or the Japanese broadcasts or even possibly the complete
filming that took place.

Compilation Notes:
This package organizes the available content from EFDVDNTSC02 (Japanese broadcast) and EFDVDSH11 (Swiss broadcast) but cuts out the repeated elements so that the show can be played roughly continuously on a computer.

Part 1 comes from EFDVDNTSC02 and it contains everything up to the start of the Swiss broadcast (EFDVDSH11), which is Jacuzzi. While EFDVDNTSC02 contains all of Jacuzzi, A Tower Struck Down, and first half of Clocks, I decided to use the Swiss broadcast master for this because the picture quality is slightly cleaner. This part contains the first few seconds of Jacuzzi because the Swiss broadcast didn't start quite at the beginning of it.

Part 2 comes from EFDVDSH11 and it includes almost everything except for Spectral Mornings, which is at the end of EFDVDSH11. There is a cut in the Swiss broadcast after Please Don't Touch before Spectral Mornings so I suspect it is not in the right place chronologically on the Swiss broadcast. On the Japanese broadcast, Steve Hackett clearly introduces Spectral Mornings after Every Day so I think it belongs there, but it is possible that the overall order of the tracks was altered for Japanese broadcast in some way. The picture quality from EFDVDSH11 is much better than EFDVDSH04, which is not used at all in this new release, because EFDVDSH11 is from the master. Both have basically the same video content so EFDVDSH11 should completely supersede EFDVDSH04. EFDVDSH11 (Part 2) starts off noticeably better than EFDVDNTSC02 but gradually the colors fade and become washed out so by the end the quality difference is more marginal.

The two parts in this release are individual mkv files. I made the original mkv files by extracting the content with MakeMKV. I cut the mkv's with Avidemux in copy mode without re-encoding. These operations were lossless so the video and audio quality is unchanged from the originals. This is not intended for DVD burning - you can't burn a DVD with NTSC and PAL parts and converting one of the parts will cause quality degradation.
