the availability of more advanced software led me to consider whether it was possible to improve a recording on which DGY and I had worked in the past. the current intervention was designed to improve the balance and readability of the instruments and the voice and I believe that the difference is easily recognizable: moreover I attenuated the buzz that was present in some parts of the recording. the pitch was also revised more carefully, this time, as well as a reduction in a good amount of flutter wherever possible by Prof. Goody. Tracks 22 and 24-28 could not be 'defluttered', however much of the rest has been greatly improved. I thank him for his always kind collaboration.
I consider this edition a great upgrade - don't miss it - samples provided

this is not the usual remaster...

what captured our attention were comments inside the above mentioned existing edition of 2008 torrented in Genesis Movement Torrent site,
regarding tape problems (dime id AlexPhoenix pointed his attention to same problem too) and considering the fixing job as "impossible".
Someone offered to fix it but nothing appeared until today... and we can understand why very well.
Audio editing know-hows have grown in 7 years and audio software has evolved too, so we decided to accept
the challenge in order to produce a better listening experience to the community.
YES, it has been a great and difficult challenge... the original transfer has indeed lot of tape problems
to fix, mainly a HUGE amount of Wow & Flutter, but also pitch needed to be corrected and pitch to be fixed
was changing lot of times, frequently suddenly, and for few seconds........
Hours, days and weeks of hard work and some headaches but we succeeded at 99,999999%......For its first
time ever, good enough........
As said before, we decided to accept the challenge in order to offer a better listening experience to the
community and as a result we are very very proud of this edition; you'll discover why.

Please, before all other considerations, listen to the sample (first part of the sample is from the original file while second part is from the restored file)
and, if not convinced how good the restore is, compare the restored files with the original ones .

No filter or compression were used!
Stereo balance, speed/pitch corrected, some tape flips & clicks removed manually.
The most clicks and some noises were purposely not removed, after consideration that they were from the performance.
Missing part of "Anyway " has been patched using "Phoenix 1975-01-28" recording.

Notes from the Complete Guide To Live Genesis Radio Shows by D. Dunnington:

British fans were rather short changed with a single show on the And Then There Were Three tour, but Phil promised a tour of England at the end of the Knebworth gig. This materialized in 1980 in the form of a 40 plus date tour of small venues all over the UK. Hallam Radio captured Genesis at Sheffield's City Hall
and broadcast the show over a specially extended edition of their "Hallam Rock" program. Hallam, Sheffield's local station, recorded many artists in the early 80s (including Steve Hackett, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman) but their recordings did not have the budget necessary to compete sound-wise with the likes of
the BBC or King Biscuit. Many versions of this show seem annoyingly slow and lethargic, but this may have been so for the broadcasts. Despite this, Hallam's recording is valuable documentation of the intensity and intimacy of this tour and comprises the complete show, stories and all.
Hallam may have broadcast the show twice, and there was another broadcast by Nottingham's Trent FM around this time, minus Say It's Alright Joe and with tracks rearranged. Standard guidelines for broadcasting live concerts in the UK around this period stipulated that the recording be destroyed within an agreed
time scale, a policy promoted by the Musicians' Union. It is therefore probable that Hallam no longer have their master recording.

Remix/Remaster Notes:

- Initial speed correction by Steve 'Speedy' Sussman in 2004. Additional speed correction by Ross C (ledwhofloyd) using MATLAB in 2026.  
- Preliminary EQ of six file sections via Har-Bal 3.7
- Spectral Recovery via Izotope RX 11
- Stem creation via DeMix Pro 6.1.0
- Clicks/pops, bumps, instances of radio static and other sonic anomalies removed via RX11.
- Multi-track mix, editing and affects application within Adobe Audition. (Compression and EQ were applied to individual stems as warranted.)
- While reviewing the final masters, Ross identified phase issues that still remained, which he also corrected using MATLAB.  This caused minor changes to the EQ response curve on some of the songs, which I subsequently corrected.
- Plug-ins from Waves, Audio Source RE (DeMix and RePan), Zynaptiq and Rast Sound were used.

Backstory:

I was looking to dip my toes into another project when this (revisited) source dropped on to my lap.  Ross and Alessandro got the ball rolling on this one, as Ross was doing some speed work with the 'Steeltown Revelation' source when Alessandro asked me if I still had the original Tony Ryan source.  
I could only locate the original 'Speedy' speed corrected source CD's, so I ripped them and sent them off.  (Their notes are included here.) When I got them back, I gave this show a really good listen and had forgotten how crisp this transfer was.
As I first worked on this recording over 20 years ago (which ultimately became SAB 12), I decided to jump in and give this a remix/remaster to see where it could go.  I referenced both SAB 12 and the TM versions as this project unfolded, and I knew what I wanted to change.  After 20 years of learning a few things
(and with the valued assistance of the 'CAITUS' team), I am confident in saying that this new version torches SAB 12!  The version of One For The Vine on this show now ranks as my favorite, and the show overall is a much more enjoyable listen. IMHO, this show gives Lyceum a run for its money.

Alessandro's Notes:

Around late February 2026 Ross and I had been trying to put together an 'old sources' composite version of Sheffield '80. We collected Steeltown Revelation, Steel City, Albert in Wonderland and the Hallam Tapes to check them. The project didn't go ahead because Albert in Wonderland was tested as lossy - so not usable - Steeltown Revelation was incomplete and Steel City turned out being a mix of several sources, including Steeltown Revelation itself. We also checked the Hallam Tapes which resulted to be very acceptable, but it stands on its own as being a complete source and probably not raw anymore (EQed).  Ultimately, Ross speed corrected Steeltown Revelation which was the best sounding of the bunch, but the project stopped there for now.

In the meantime, I had sent Tony Ryan's second tape transfer to Ross, because he probably only listened to his first transfer (the CRAP release available on Genesis-torrents) which is not so good and also tested as lossy.  Gathering some more info from Dan and going back to my memory and my own old files, I reconstructed the story of those Tony Ryan tapes transfers.  Tony did a 1st transfer of his own tapes (allegedly 2nd gen), which resulted in the CRAP 01 release.  I also have a version of that release slightly reworked by myself (some de-clicking and other little improvements, but nothing major) which i called V.2.0.

Then Tony did a 2nd transfer, which is the only point in the story that is still not 100% clear: if it was actually Tony who did the transfer himself, or if he sent his tapes to Speedy to transfer them.  In the release notes of the files I received from Speedy in early April 2004, it states that Tony did the transfer (his 2nd transfer) and then Speedy speed corrected it.  I also have archived on more than 1 DVD Speedy's speed corrected version, and they all state 'Tony Ryan second transfer - speed corrected'.  I tend to believe it was actually Tony who did that 2nd tape transfer, which fortunately turned out to be much, much better than the 1st one.  Shortly after having received Speedy's speed corrected SHN files I made some basic fixes: I mainly repaired some clicks and other little imperfections and did a couple of patches for some short missing (non musical) sections.  I worked on about 2/3 of the show from 3 July to 25 July 2004.

Neither Dan nor me are in possession of the raw Tony Ryan 2nd transfer prior to Speedy's speed correction.  (I recently reached out to Speedy asking if he could send me the raw files, but sadly he's not responding to my e-mails.)

I then sent Tony Ryan's 2nd transfer (Speedy's corrected and AV declicked files) as 2 uncut WAV files to Dan, who did some did some gain lowering, de-clipping (it occurred on a very few spots) and also an initial round of phase rotation.

It was at this point that Dan made a couple of test mixes of DT/DE from this file set to evaluate the feasibility of a remix, the results of which were more than convincing to undertake this project.  Ross performed a more accurate speed correction of the 2 uncut WAV files which were then sent back to Dan to remix/remaster.

BURNING ADVICE

The main part of the download is a single ISO file that can be burned to a Blu-ray Disc using a Blu-ray burner drive and either free software or using built-in features of Windows (supposedly) or Mac. On a Mac with the latest OS, simply right-click the ISO file to bring up a menu option to burn the image. If it's an older version of Mac OS, use the Disk Utility's Open Disk Image to open the ISO file and then click the Burn button at the top of the window. In Windows, the right-click option is supposed to be available using the built-in Windows Disc Image Burner tool. If your version of Windows doesn't natively support this, it seems ImgBurn is the preferred free application that will do the trick.

NOTES

Artwork is available as a Blu-ray cover and insert. All images were appropriately procured via gettyimages: https://www.gettyimages.com/. Credit goes to Michael Putland (front cover and spine) which are actual photos taken at the venue during the recording. Credit also goes to Goedefroit Music (still image during the video) which was not taken at Empire Pool, but rather a month later, and creates a decent visual mood-setter for the audio.

Blu-ray authoring software is not the greatest without spending a boatload of money. So, the Audio Selection menu contains the three audio options described above, but it doesn't maintain state or the previous selections you made; however, it does correctly set the audio stream you select. By default, 5.1 DTS-HD MA is selected, so the easiest path to the music is to just hit the Play All option on the main menu. To hear just select songs, use the Track Listing option on the main menu. Track listings don't keep track of the last song you played, so you always have to navigate from the top of the menu. When you first load the Blu-ray Disc, the Brian Matthew introduction is played once through and then takes you to the main menu.
